1 【極まる】 〔限界に達する〕 reach [be carried to] an extreme; reach an extreme point; be at an extremity.

●不都合きわまる be utterly reprehensible [inexcusable]; be beyond the pale

・退屈きわまる話 an interminably tedious story

・極まるところを知らぬ know no bounds [limits]; be beyond all bounds; there is no end to [of] 《such problems》

・物価の高騰は極まるところを知らない. Prices are soaring with no end in sight.

・世界人口の増加は極まるところを知らぬようだ. The growth of the world population seems to know no limits.

●無礼きわまるやつだ. He is an extremely rude person.

・歓楽極まりて哀情多し. ⇒かんらく³.

2 【窮まる】 〔行きづまる〕 end; terminate; be at [come to] an end.

●その国の運命は窮まった. The fate of the country is sealed.

・ここに進退窮まった. Now we are really in a corner. | There is no longer anywhere to turn.
